One of the best things about the last Paper Swap (hosted by the fabulous Lawenda) was that my partner took.... a bit of extra time to get the package together, as did I. With good reason though - we decided to make a custom piece for each other. Dale is from Canada and lives in Korea. She made this fabulous necklace for me! Loads of detail that adds interest to the amazing style. Speaking of paper, she also included a section of Korean newspaper and a pack stationery made in Korea that is too cute - I'll have to scan a piece. I love collecting papers from other countries, whether it's tissue paper, newsprint, wrap or wallpaper, stamps... All great additions to my stash! We agreed on 3 ATCs and I absolutely love hers... they are rich in color and design and will make my collection infinitely more fabulous. I haven't done many swaps, let alone tag swaps, so when this opportunity came along on Art-e-Zine Cafe, I decided to join, not giving any thought to the fact that I'd get stumped. But getting stuck is a good thing because it forces the kind of problem solving that our brains usually slough off. Part of being an artist (heck, part of life) is entering new territory, not knowing what to do and finding a workable solution.  I realize they aren't major works of art, but I like the way they turned out (I did the back sides too and made 6, duplicated one of them due to time constraints), I think they're cute. Whether or not they convey the Home Sweet Home theme intended is another question. It was fun finding photos I had taken (except for the sofa) and working with as many materials as I possibly could - acrylics, pastels, wholey paper, stamps, gaffer tape, rub-ons, charcoal... This Peace Angel is for a winter wonderland-themed altered tin swap, still apropos considering the cold front that is approaching Kentucky. And it's only 30 degrees! Fortunately the altered attic is very well insulated and being on the third floor, stays toasty warm.   I may be a couple of months late  but fortunately my swap pal and I use the same calendar! Wonder if she has started on mine... I love altering tins and this time I wanted to try something new, so I made a cutout with my trusty dremel, and twisted the edges back for an uneven, yet, rustic look. It was also a good reason to heat up the beeswax, mmmm, love that smell and the way found objects, lace even, can be repositioned with a blast of the heat gun. It's Like Christmas in October! When I signed on to participate in Art in a Carton, a few months back, I thought it sounded fun, like a way to connect with a variety of artists I'd never met and, well, just a cool idea. I didn't think about the fact that it would begin with a carton. Filled with incredible art. The package I got the other day from Susan - who lives in Germany - was packed with exceptionally high quality pieces. the matchbook and carton are beautifully embellished.  The notebook - is actually a cover with a pad of post-it notes inside! And just when I'd gotten over my addiction to post-it notes. At one time I had lined pads, flags, tiny rectangular ones, in a variety of colors... What a great idea. The thing I like most about this project is the lack of restrictions. Whatever fits in a carton. The packet rattled, like it was an embellished seed package, but I couldn't find any trace of labeling, so I had to open it - very carefully (I still can't...

When I was working on my piece for the Trash Outside the Box Art-E-Zine swap, I was so focused on finishing it and sending it on its way to Canada, that I forgot that I'd get one in return. And, did I ever. This beautiful box was created by Pat MacMicken, who also hosted the swap. I'm amazed by the intricacy, detail, the sheer prettiness of this piece and I'm excited about adding it to my collection. A prize for sure! That is the appeal of swaps, to me, being able to look around my studio and see fairy jars, ATCs, shrines and boxes, all made by women I've mostly never met in person, but with whom I feel connected through art. And, I suppose, knowing that my work is in studios across North America, hopefully emanating all the same good will, good vibes and sense of being in tune with artists working at all levels, with or without chronic illness, but all with our fair share of burdens, each translating those into meaningful, stunning, radiant art.
