Patti Edmon Altered Attic: Untitled

Sunday, January 30, 2011

My husband, Jim, has been very busy in the studio. Today I finally got to see his latest, just-finished piece (not yet titled) and I'm absolutely in love with it! He manages to incorporate multiple processes and materials and such detail yet it's cohesive and, well, magnificent.

A lifelong artist and illustrator, Jim doesn't get to spend a great deal of time in the studio - he's fairly consumed with the graphic design and advertising business.
Over the past 25 years, though, I've observed the way he creates - a series of pieces followed by a seemingly 'dormant' period when his creative muse is actually evolving wildly. So, when the opportunity presents itself, he uses a new trick or two and turns out a piece of work that leaves me totally awestruck.

I have spent all my studio time working on my altered fabric book, which is quite a process. Preparing 3 sets of 5 page signatures is a bit time consuming, though extremely liberating. It's a kind of artistic freedom that I so needed, sorta like getting out of my own way. I hope I can apply to every project. Now if my sewing machine will just cooperate!

I really like your husband's art. It has an appealing, neat, concise look about it. And your fabric samples are simply luscious.

I have been so bad about visiting blogs and trying so hard this year to do better and make sure I visit several every day. So glad to pop in tonight and see all that is going on in your house.

Can't wait to see more of your fabric book! It looks delicious so far! That is another medium I would so love to try but not brave enough yet.

Your husband's work is beautiful! I see the graphic artist in him. My BFA is in graphic design though I don't have as much experience as he does. It is always interesting to me to see how graphic artists "play free" away from client work.

Hope you are well and your year off to a great start!

Your fabric piles are amazing! You're going to have some fun pages with all that variety. I was wondering about how your sewing machine relationship was going!!
