Hello from Asheville

This week has been amazing... Asheville is definitely the town for artists and art lovers. Or shoppers. Or people who like to eat. And see cool buildings and signage and listen to street musicians. We've run into 3 people we know from home... guess this isn't the most original idea, must be because it's a good one. Our cabin is amazing... hot tub and uber kitchen (nicer than mine) and lots of mountain air. Will post photos when we return!

what does March look like?

I actually chased a rainbow the other evening, after another of the kind of rains that portend the arrival of spring. The rainbow had moved on leaving a brilliant, fabulous sky. It has been quite a while since I took a photo stroll, guess I've been impatient with the gray, damp chill of earlier weeks... so unfriendly to my arthritis; but I was drawn out by the fiery hues that seared the gray flat expanse and lit the grass and first crocuses with an unearthly glow. Then I noticed the colors of the March Calendar Girl. Carbury Neal, of Vermont, one of the members of the swap group I belong to, used the very same palette. Intentional or intuitive? I'm not sure but she nailed it for sure. I anticipate the arrival of Miss April any day now. (My month is June so I have plenty of time:) I wanted to share the girls of the first three months. It's amazing how many variations one concept can conjure. That used to be a frightening concept for me, no right way, no guidelines even, a v

Journal covers, box lids, giant puzzle pieces and, of course, canvas, all fair game when it comes to mixing up the media. I have felt myself growing and stretching, almost on a cellular level, as an artist and it's exhilarating and feels a little frantic at the same time. Frantic because I don't have the hours to produce the ideas that surge through my brain, and exhilarating because, well that should be obvious. I was just visiting Nicole over on Beadwright and wow, I admire her ability to post nearly every day. Especially since she has lupus, an autoimmune nightmare that, like mine, steals her precious time and energy and dumps them into some toxic, useless wasteland. But she doesn't let that stop her from saying hello; I feel like I need to have loads of new work to post but I suppose that isn't the point. The reason I know that is because I have met SO many wonderful, incredible artists who commiserate, support and come back to visit. Bloggers like (Bluebeard and)

I haven't been able to post any of my work for so long... before the gallery show on the 20th (of Feb:) I spent every spare second getting the journals and canvas finished. After the show I spent over a week recovering but over the weekend we finally had some sun and I was able to set up outside and get some photos. My favorite journal was purchased before I could have it photographed, but it is going to a wonderful home. I've decided to do a series - wasn't quite done with that thought:) Hope is a departure from my usual; I most always use photographs I've taken, or old copyright-free images. If you recognize 'her' let me know so I can give credit - I can't recall where I found the lovely girl. I'll take them to New Editions next, the gallery that sold 8 journals in November, to see if the owner will take more - wish me luck. I want to start an etsy store, now there is artfire and another one I hadn't seen before... and I'm not sure about wheth

Is Spring Really in the Air?

It was a fine day for Lacrosse... low 40s and sunny, for the first time in... days? weeks? Definitely a chill in the air but it felt great to sit outside with a bunch of other parents who don't know the rules or strategies of the game. My son, Dylan, in the foreground, has been playing for three weeks now! Their middle school hasn't had a team in years and there are only a handful of teams in the area, albeit a large handful. Aside from drumming this is his passion, the only sport he's shown an aptitude for along with enthusiasm - I suppose all sports are expensive these days, padding and helmets and monster gloves, those sticks and sports glasses... we've joined the ranks of parents trying to figure out how to get our kids to two places at the same time - but the season isn't as long as soccer:) Now that Alice has grown and Dylan hasn't yet had his 'spurt' she's nearly as tall and they look so much alike. She was a good sport and spent the day at th

What's more fun than going to a baby shower? Making the card of course!! I've been to a zillion showers, some more interesting than others, but this was an elegant, catered party with fabulous hors d'oeuvres, quiche, mimosas (I only had one) and gourmet cupcakes. Hosted by my friend Debbie, (often referred to here as my art angel:) and she definitely knows how to throw a party. It was a three-hour long gathering of interesting, funny, charming women! Though many of us were meeting for the first time, we are all bonded by motherhood. One of my favorite part is the sharing of our own stories - the sometimes heartache, funny labor room anecdotes, and always fond remembrances. It's amazing how, after two, or a dozen or more years every detail is imprinted in the part of our memory that will never fade. I brought the card back home - plan to remove the wire and attach it to a small collage with the embellished heart and the haiku I wrote: For Crystal tight fist unfolding wh
